Crime and Security Research Institute Research Assistant Dan Harborne and DAIS funded research intern Deeon Roy will present at the FS-AI: Formula Student driverless event (Silverstone, UK).
The University's Formula Student AI team will be participating in a showcase of solutions for 'driverless' racing as part of the main Formula Student competition event.
This year is the first time the UK Formula Student competition includes an AI component. A subset of the UK's Formula Student University teams will showcase work towards AI for driverless racing. As part of the FS-AI effort at Cardiff, research is being conducted by a DAIS ITA sponsored intern towards explainable Deep Learning driverless solutions. Explainable AI solutions, such as these, aim to not only make decisions about what actions the car should make, but also explain the reasoning behind those actions. Deep Learning is a sub-set of AI techniques that often offers the state of the art in AI solutions but at the cost of engineers and end-users being unable to fully understand the reasoning behind their output. The interpretability of AI is an important aspect when seeking greater safety and usability from AI within many domains (including that of vehicle control). Research like this provides steps towards society capitalising on the strengths of Artificial Intelligence safely.
